Ms Rachel Cashman

Chair - Local Authority

Rachel has over 20 years experience, including at Executive Director and Board level, of leadership in the public and private sectors, most notably in healthcare, life sciences, education and equalities and in particular delivering large scale change and innovation through inter-sectoral collaboration and the development of networks. Rachel is a country member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, an all women corps of the UK Territorial Army, trained to provide a range of major incident and emergency preparedness services with the Metropolitan Police, the Foreign Office and with the UK Armed Forces. As well as her work with Balfour Primary School, Rachel is a fellow of the RSA and a trustee of the Brighton Oasis Project.

Mr Ben Marle

Co-opted Governor - Premises

Previously a teaching assistant for 6 years and play worker for 9 years in North London schools, Ben joined the Balfour staff team in 2002 as a premises manager in KS2 until 2015 when he was assigned to look after both sites. Ben has been a governor for the junior school for 2 full terms and one full term for the merged school until 2015, then recently came back to the Governing Body after a break to concentrate on his career development. Ben is a co-opted governor and is currently undertaking all the governor support training courses necessary to fulfil his role efficiently. Areas of expertise: building maintenance and site management, and all aspects of health and safety management in educational settings.

Ms Clare Kitchen

Parent Governor

Clare Kitchen has been a parent governor since January 2017. Her youngest child is at Balfour - her two eldest have left and moved on to Dorothy Stringer School. Her background is as a journalist and editor, but she is about to re-train as a secondary school maths teacher. She has helped out with a variety of parent groups since her children started school. She is a JONK governor.

Mr Nick Huxley

Staff Governor

Nick is in his 7th teaching year at Balfour, currently teaching in Year 2, but previously in Early Years (Reception). Whilst in EYFS, he had leadership experience, being the EYFS leader for 2 years.

Before teaching, Nick worked for 12 years in the Telecommunications and Networking industry, which links with his other current responsibility as subject co-leader for Computing at Balfour.

Before re-training as a teacher, Nick was the main carer for his three daughters for 3 years, during which time he became Chair of the PTA at Goldstone Primary in Hove. His daughters now all attend Blatchington Mill Secondary school. As well as his teaching responsibilities, Nick can also be found involved with music, inside and outside of school. Look out for him at many an Open Mic night across town, as well as the school’s Christmas and Summer Fairs.

Mr William Deighan

Co-opted Governor

William Deighan is Headteacher of Varndean School and is a strong advocate of the Arts. He is Chair of Sound City (The Music Hub) and on the board of the Music Trust and Our Future City. His interests lie in staff development and Leadership and Management. Four of his team have gone on to headship in their own right and a further two, to CEO.
He believes in an individual approach to learning where every student arrives at Varndean as a gift with already well established giftedness. The three words that guide his work are Kindness, Kindness and Kindness.
His strong belief is that Balfour School is Outstanding and just doesn't know it yet.

Mrs Charlotte Bonham-Carter

Parent Governor

Charlotte Bonham-Carter has extensive experience in cultural management and academic leadership. She has held curatorial positions at a number of public arts institutions, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Barbican Art Gallery, Institute for Contemporary Arts and Art on the Underground. She is currently Programme Director of Culture and Enterprise at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, where she oversees several BA, MA and MBA courses at the intersection of culture, curation, innovation and enterprise. She has two children at Balfour, and a third one making his way there in a few years.

Mr Nick Taylor

Co-Opted

Nick Taylor is currently studying at the School of Advanced Study in preparation to undertake doctoral study in history where he hopes he can teach in the subject. Having spent five years working in the House of Commons he believes he has the skills and commitment to support the school’s ethos and vision. Nick’s particular attention over his term will be on improving maths and supporting the school’s ambition to eliminate attainment gaps, especially for disadvantaged pupils, to give every child a fantastic start in life. Nick is also the local councillor for Withdean ward on Brighton & Hove City Council.

Mr Pierre Dowsett

Co-opted Governor - SEN

Pierre is the director of a Town Planning Consultancy based in Brighton and a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). He was co-opted on to the Governing Board in February 2017. He has 2 boys in the school, one presently in year 1 and the other in year 3. Since Joining the FGB Pierre has developed a focus on SEN matters becoming SEN Governor in October 2017.
