What have we been learning this week? (Summer 2  Week 4)

English

This week the children have been publishing their propaganda work and have been planning their persuasive leaflet for next week.

At home you can: Please can you look at persuasive leaflets at home.

History

This week the children have learnt about Christmas during WW2 and how it changed through the years. They will be working in groups to create a presentation about their chosen year. They have also looked at Anderson Shelters in DT for their unit on structure.

English

This week the children have been writing non-fiction reports about propaganda during WW2. They have selected their own poster and then analysed it, focusing on audience and layout. The children will then work on publishing them once they're back from Blacklands.

At home you can: Please can you look at propaganda which is used today and compare it to WW2.

Next week: After camp we shall be publishing our work.

History

This week the children have learnt about the Home Guard and their role during WW2. The children have analysed how effective they were and discussed whether they felt women should have been allowed to join. The children have also continued their learning around D-Day.

At home you can: Children could watch Dad’s Army.

Next week: We will be looking at VE day.

This week the children have been writing horror stories based on the tale of the 'Hairy Hands'. They have looked at different tools for creating tension and are now starting to write newspaper articles about their horror story.

History

This week the children have started looking at propaganda during WW2 and the impact it had on the war. They have really enjoyed comparing and discussing many different types from this time. We have also learnt about D Day as it has been the anniversary.

This week the children have started their new text  ”Letters from the lighthouse” which links to our WW2 topic. The children have written dairies, descriptive scenes and adverts. We shall continue to read this text to support our history work around evacuees next week.

This week the children have been taking their final mock SATS. They have worked really hard and lots of children have improved their scores in both reading and grammar.

At home you can: Enjoy reading some fantasy books – why not try the Wolf Brother sequel?

Next week: We will finish Wolf Brother and write a 100 words challenge paragraph!

Maths

This week we have been focusing on finding missing angles in a triangle and on a straight line. We have also tried lots of tricky problem solving activities. The children also took their final Mocks and tried very hard.

This week the children have been publishing their “Book of Renn” work. They have been working on their editing and re-drafting skills. In grammar we have been looking at how to use semi-colons and colons in their writing.

Next week: We will finish Wolf Brother and writing our 'Book or Renn'.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on shape. The children have worked on using a protractor to accurately measure angles. We have also looked at how to find missing angles on a straight line with and without a protractor.

Science

As it is Science Week, the children have taken part in a range of exciting activities, such as: testing paper aeroplanes and helicopters to measure air pressure, creating info graphics about the channel tunnel and carried out an experiment to measure the amount of plastic material in clothing. They also enjoyed the Fizz Pop Bang workshop!

At home you can: Continue to look for angles in the real world.

This week the children took part in the “Mexicolore” workshop where they were able to learn more about the ancient Maya and their way of life. They also took part in dressing up and playing a range of Mayan instruments.

This week the children have been taking their second round of MOCK SATS. They have taken all three tests in Maths. Their arithmetic test and two reasoning papers. We are pleased with the progress they have made with their fraction work.

This week in our literacy we have been improving our alien spaceship poems from last week by editing them and adding passive voice for suspense. The children have then spent time publishing them for a class book.

Maths –division

We have been working on our long and short written methods for division. Most children have demonstrated a secure method for short division (bus stop) and now we are all continuing to work on long division.

English – “The playground monster” and “Winter the huntsman”

This week our Literacy has been centred on a range of poems which use figurative language. We have been focusing on similes, metaphors and personification. The children have been creating their own alien spacecraft poem using these features.

At home you can: Read different poems and discuss their features.

Maths –multiplication

We have been working on our long and short written methods for multiplication. Although the children have become confident with this method, it has highlighted an issue with knowledge of Times Tables. Therefore each class has spent extra time practising their Times Tables and will continue to do so.

At home you can: Practise their Times Tables.
