What have we been learning this week? (Spring 1 Week 2)

English

This week, the children have been looking at different ways to use dashes in their writing. They have also been working on improving their use of speech to advance action.

At home, you can: Look out for different ways to use dashes in your writing.

Next week: We shall be continuing with Floodland where we will write stories and letters.

Maths

The children have been continuing to look at decimals this week. We have learnt how to divide and multiply decimals by whole numbers. We have also started looking at SATS word problems for practise.

At home, you can: Please revise timestables and related division facts.

Next week: We will be continuing with decimals.

RE

This week the children went on a trip to the local Synagogue where they learnt about Jewish weddings. Next week we shall be learning more about Christian weddings so as to compare them.

This week, the children have started to think about what would happen if England flooded. We have started our new book called ‘Floodland’ and have been writing newspaper articles about the main character going missing.

At home, you can: Look for different types of conjunctions used to join clauses and ideas.

Next week: We shall be continuing with Floodland and finishing and publishing our newspaper articles.

Maths

The children have been continuing to looking at coordinate grids, by finding missing coordinates and translating shapes across a grid. We have also been revising different calculations focusing on numbers containing decimals.

Next week: We will be continuing with decimals.

PSHE

This week has been our Global Learning week: our focus has been on refugees. We have been participating in lots of discussion and drama-based activities.

This week, the children have been writing and editing their balanced arguments answering the question of whether or not humans should be allowed in rainforests. At the end of the week, we will be starting our new text 'Trash' and beginning to look at persuasive writing. Grammar this week is focused on adverbs and adjectives.

At home you can: Please can you look out for different types of adverbs and adjectives when reading.

Next week: We shall be continuing to look at persuasive writing, both formal and informal, looking at charity leaflets.

 

Maths - Fractions

The children have been looking at fractions, revising ordering and comparing fractions with the same and different denominators

Geography

This week, we have continued our Fair Trade topic and have been looking at how the cocoa bean goes from tree to shop and all the steps in between. We’ve also been looking at how much money each person in this process receives for doing their job, and discussed whether this is fair and whether Fair Trade could make it fairer.

 

RE

We visited St. Matthias Church to continue to look at how Christian’s use art to convey messages. It was a lovely afternoon where the children were able to express themselves using art.

English

This week, the children have been debating, researching and preparing to write balanced arguments answering the question: Should humans be allowed in rainforests?  In grammar, we have been looking at verbs and modal verbs.

At home you can: Please can you look out for different types of verbs when reading.

Next week: We shall be writing our balanced arguments and then beginning to look at our new text 'Trash' and focusing on some persuasive writing.

Maths

The children have been looking at BODMAS/BIDMAS and then we began to revise our basic fraction knowledge.

This week, we have continued our Fair Trade topic and have been locating the countries that produce Fair Trade products as well as learning how to use longitude and lattitude.

This week the children have begun to write their own descriptive stories based around the theme of being lost in the jungle. They have been using multi-sensory sentences with a range of adjectives and powerful verbs. In grammar, we have been looking at the 7 different types of nouns.

This week we started our new topic 'Going Global' with our wow start comparing Fairtrade and Non-Fairtrade food to help understand that taste is not the main reason behind consumers choosing to buy these products.
