What have we been learning this week? (Spring 2 Week 2)

English

This week the children have written non-chronological reports about wolves. The children have included all the features and a wide range of punctuation which has made them very enjoyable to read. In grammar we have been looking at the present perfect tense.

At home you can: Enjoy reading a range of non-chronological reports.

Next week: We will continue to read Wolf Brother and write in role.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on measure. The children have worked on converting measurements and have learnt about imperial measurements as well.

At home you can: Continue to play TTRock Stars at home.

This week the children have started their new class text 'Wolf Brother'. We have been using this text to help us research and write non-chorological reports set in Neolithic times. The children have begun to write these reports and will continue to edit and improve them next week. In grammar we have been looking at the past and present progressive.

This week we have been focusing on finding the area and perimeter of triangles and parallelograms.

This week we have been focusing on matching equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. The children have been matching them and comparing them in class.

Topic

This week the children took part in the “Mexicolore” workshop where they were able to learn more about the ancient Maya and their way of life. They also took part in dressing up and playing a range of Mayan instruments.

This week the children have been taking their second round of MOCK SATS. They have taken both reading and SPAG tests. We are particularly proud of the progress the children have made in their grammar tests.

At home you can: Research an area of Fairtrade that you are interested in.

Next week: We will be publishing our newspapers and writing Fairtrade raps.

Maths

This week the children have been taking their second round of MOCK SATS. They have taken all three tests in Maths. Their arithmetic test and two reasoning papers. We are pleased with the progress they have made with their fraction work.

At home you can: Continue to practise Times Tables esp.12.

This week the children have continued to read their class text ‘Trash’. We have been looking at varying sentence length for effect. The children then wrote atmospheric paragraphs based around the book. Year 6 have also been spending extra time on their grammar as, they have been looking at word classes this week. For example: types of conjunctions – co-coordinating and subordinating

At home you can: Look at newspapers and discuss the features ready for next week!

Next week: We will be writing newspapers based on our class text.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on fractions. We have spent time multiplying fractions by fractions and fractions by whole numbers.

Year 6 have also been spending extra time on their grammar as, they have been looking on word classes this week. For example: types of determiners and prepositions.

At home you can: Practise classifying different word types within sentences that you read!

Next week: We will continue to edit and redraft our work.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on fractions. We have spent time adding fractions with different denominators and finding fractions of amounts. We have been using the ‘part, part, whole model’ and the ‘bar model’ to support the children with their learning.

This week the children have been taking Mock SATS in both Reading and SPAG. They have worked really hard and tried their best. We are all proud of how much effort they have put into their first practise.

This week we have also been taking Mock SATS in Maths. The children have taken three papers which practise both their reasoning and arithmetic skills.

English: Poetry  

This week in our literacy we have been improving our alien spaceship poems from last week by editing them and adding passive voice for suspense. The children have then spent time publishing them for a class book.

At home you can: Read different poems and discuss their features.

Maths –division

We have been working on our long and short written methods for division. Most children have demonstrated a secure method for short division (bus stop) and now we are all continuing to work on long division.

At home you can: Practise their times Tables.

What have we been learning this week? (Autumn 1 Week 5)

English – “The playground monster” and “Winter the huntsman”

This week our Literacy has been centred on a range of poems which use figurative language. We have been focusing on similes, metaphors and personification. The children have been creating their own alien spacecraft poem using these features.

At home you can: Read different poems and discuss their features.

Maths –multiplication

We have been working on our long and short written methods for multiplication. Although the children have become confident with this method, it has highlighted an issue with knowledge of Times Tables. Therefore each class has spent extra time practising their Times Tables and will continue to do so.

At home you can: Practise their Times Tables.
