Curriculum Rationale

Our Vision: Success for everyone in a school with a strong sense of belonging

Curriculum Rationale

At Balfour Primary School, our curriculum is driven by our core priorities of Achievement, Belonging and Curriculum (the Balfour ABCs). We believe that every child deserves an ambitious, inclusive and inspiring education that enables them to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Our knowledge-rich curriculum is carefully designed to build learning over time. Knowledge, concepts and vocabulary are sequenced, explicitly taught and revisited so that pupils develop deep understanding, make meaningful connections and apply their learning with confidence. Every subject is valued and contributes to the development of well-rounded learners who are curious, resilient and prepared for the future. Spoken language and vocabulary acquisition underpin all learning, and pupil talk is prioritised.

We are committed to ensuring high levels of achievement for all. Through effective teaching, purposeful assessment and retrieval practice, pupils develop secure knowledge, strong skills and a growing understanding of themselves as successful learners.

Belonging sits at the heart of our curriculum. We celebrate diversity, nurture positive relationships and create an environment where every child feels known, valued and included. Through high-quality adaptive teaching and carefully planned support, all pupils, including those with SEND and other vulnerabilities, can access, participate in and succeed in learning.

Our curriculum connects pupils to the world beyond Balfour by living our school values. Our 'Balfour Bank' ensures rich experiences, cultural capital, personal development and opportunities to contribute to their community. Pupils develop the confidence, knowledge and values to make a positive difference in society.

By placing Achievement, Belonging and Curriculum at the centre of all we do, we aim to ensure that every child leaves Balfour with the knowledge, character and confidence to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
