We use the White Rose Maths schemes of learning and small steps as the basis for planning our maths curriculum at Balfour. This supports and ensures progression across the school and ensures consistency of models and images used to support the teaching of different concepts.
We are not merely a worksheet or text book school. We use many other fantastic resources such as the NCETM and NRICH alongside the premium WhiteRose resources which are adapted to support the children to be:
- Visualisers – we use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach to help pupils understand mathematics and to make connections between different representations.
- Describers – we place great emphasis on mathematical language and questioning so pupils can discuss the mathematics they are doing, and enables them to take ideas further.
- Experimenters – as well as being fluent mathematicians, we want pupils to love and learn more about mathematics through self-initiated exploration.
Our curriculum is designed to build strong mathematical foundations to enable children to move on to more complex tasks. For example, we cannot expect pupils to add two numbers together before they understand what each individual number represents.
Each step builds carefully from the previous step, building on pupils’ prior knowledge to develop new skills. Planning for long term memory includes regular spaced, interleaved retrieval tasks such as ‘Flashback 4’ – a question from last lesson, last week, last term, last year and low-stakes quizzes.
